NEWCASTLE quay tower

A significant site on the historic Newcastle quayside within close proximity to the Stephensons Quarter, THAA was commissioned to generate some concepts for a multifunctional building incorporating commercial and hospitality.

The client wanted to explore the viability of a tall building in this iconic location, situated in the Tyne Gorge area, mindful of recent tall buildings being constructed throughout the city.

The site is complex as it is set back from the river edge, fronting a busy road. To the immediate east it adjoins a new apartment building, and a heavily wooded hillside to the west. A casino and car park are situated to the rear of the site, 24m above street level.

The mass of the building is broken down into two distinct blocks. At street level, the lower block, which comprises of hospitality and office, responds to the massing, scale and materiality of its neighbours.

The upper block is visually separated from the lower by the introduction of a set back hotel sky lobby and garden with terrace. The slender form of the 120 room 5 star hotel sits high above the river setting, providing commanding view across the river and city, redefining the skyline of the quayside.
