druridge bay bird hides

Following on from the success of the new Wildlife Discovery Centre at Hauxley Nature Reserve, Northumberland Wildlife Trust invited THAA to design wildlife watching structures within their East Chevington Nature Reserve, in Druridge Bay, Northumberland.

Currently there are 4 hides and 1 temporary classroom on the site, these are unwelcoming, metal, noisy boxes. They are metal because historically, wooden hides have been burnt which is why the Trust require new structures to withstand major acts of vandalism.

We were tasked with developing discreet bird hides that visitors could use to view the wide array of bird life without disturbing the animals in their natural habitat.

Our approach was to design a family of bird hides, each with their own distinct form and character, responding to their specific site constraints.

To reflect the environment the durable material palette comprised of natural muted colours and textures which integrated with the landscape seamlessly. The hides would weather gracefully over time, blending into the scenery.
