BLAYNEY ROW

This was a complex site in a rural location in Newburn, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The plot comprised of an existing stable building which the client wanted to convert into a compact family home in open countryside.

We were commissioned, post outline planning to develop the detail design of the house. Following discussions with Newcastle City Councils planners it was agreed that a modern aesthetic could be adopted as long as we retained the volume of the existing stable building.

For this site, the client wanted a low-key environmentally friendly home reminiscent of a timber longhouse. Adopting a fabric first approach we produced a highly insulated and airtight timber frame structure clad in a black metal standing seam skin with timber and glazed gables.

The entire living space is on a single storey and comprises of two bedrooms and an open plan living/dining space, all with generously high vaulted ceilings.
